PtA

Summary
The "Participatory Toward Anticipatory" project envisioned to put the public at the center of decision-making around new technologies. It will instigate a shift from a traditional top-down approach, led by the private sector and government, to a bottom-up model where society collectively shapes its desired future.

To achieve this envision, it will reignite interest in Technology Assessment (TA) in Canada and create a dynamic, engaging TA tool designed to explore how the public can actively participate in the process. As a pilot, the tool will focus on anticipating the social impacts of artificial intelligence systems.
Approaches
Our project introduces a novel approach to Technology Assessment (TA) by employing a gamified participatory Technology Assessment (pTA) tool for Artificial Intelligence systems. This tool will facilitate collective decision-making and educate participants on the societal impacts of AI. The followings are the approaches we would employ to achieve it.

Systemic Design
To understand the complexity of the task at hand, we will explore the technology assessment system in Canada by collecting different perspectives from experts and interest holders.

Foresight
To allow the collective envisioning, the pTA tool we are developing will be equipped with foresight methods. These methods will allow the public to undertake the foresight activities even without a prior knowledge about these.

Gamification
To keep it engaging and entertaining for the public, the gamification elements will be utilized in designing the tool.
